PHARMACIST OF THE YEAR 2015
Gore pharmacist Bernie McKone has been named Pharmaceutical Society of New Zealand-MIMS Pharmacist of the Year.
McKone, who owns Quins Pharmacy in Gore and Waikiwi Pharmacy in Invercargill, was recognised for his work in developing clinical roles for pharmacists working alongside GPs in primary care. He received the honour at a function in Auckland.
He has held roles in various clinical governance groups and is presently a member of the WellSouth Primary Health Network board,
He had to keep the news a closely guarded secret for several weeks, having found out he was in line for it before the opening of the duck shooting season, he said.
"I just about fell in the river [when I heard the news]," he said.
The award is the top accolade among the country's 3600 pharmacists and he felt honoured to have received it, he said.
It was great to be recognised for his work in developing the clinical roles as it provided a platform to be able to attract young pharmacists, he said.
